Which are your favorites?

Other than the "real" one, I liked: Logan Miller, Axel Medellin, Doug Hills. I felt that many of them started out strong and whiffed the ending. Awesome exercise.

Impressive. Really. In fact, that's a great way to find future talent. You can see how they interpret a script and you can see the results against other artists. There are a few on that list who should be working -- if they're not already.

Oh, my favs...?

Fernardo Pinto had some good expression. Cartooony, yet with a serious edge.

Doug Hills has a wonderful brush style and good use of camera which allows space for dialog.

Logan Miller nailed it with the colors and clean lines. That guy should be working now.

Steve Grant did an exercise like this a few years back. He didn't get as many responses, but its a terrific idea that should be put out there every year.

And I think it highlights my notion that the writer writes and the artist performs the piece. Like a play, more than one artist could legitimately perform the piece.

Absolutely. The same is true of screenwriters in relation to directors and actors.

It's all about the combined effect, in my opinion. As long as he hits it 8 or 9 times out of 10, then it works. That's how I see my art work. It's not good across the board, but there's plenty enough to carry it across the issue - and it can only get better with time.

The problem, for me, is finding an artist at just the right stage. If they are too good they will get snapped up by bigger fish or they will go the bigger pond where those fish are at. But at just the right time the artist can grow while working on my book -- which is great.

There are a ton of fantastic artists out there that are on the verge of breaking in somewhere, and the trick is to snag them with the right project before someone else does, and hope they're reliable as well as talented.

Helps to have a track record, so they're not making a huge leap of faith. Also not asking them to do too much for the pitch. Five to eight pages, max.

Yeah, good points. Especially the reliability thing. I might see some really nice art... but that doesn't mean they can do it for 22 pages x 5 (mini-series) or x a year (monthly). Also, the tricky part is finding someone who will dedicate time for something that will take time away from whatever they've been doing in their life up to this point.

It's scary.

Lots of these people have day jobs but evenings free, or are just emerging from art school. The ones that Tweet about wanting to break in are the best!

The ones that I've had flake out the most are the ones that had comics work some time ago and faded from the scene ... there's usually a reason. They're the ones holding themselves back, and you probably can't help them.

Rich Fuscia pulled his piece together with some nice color work.

Erich Owen works in a less realistic style, but it works well.

I like Doug Hostetler, Erich Owen, and Fernando Pinto, just straight up. With notes: Logan Miller takes the prize, I'd like to see David Yu with a better letterer, Mike Cooper's the most interesting, Doug Hills is the one I'd most like to write for, I think.
